Grant's Bio

Born and raised in Kelso in the Scottish Borders, Grant is not a native Yorkshireman, but he has made Gods own country his adopted home. Grant lives in Driffield with his partner Nicola and Labrador Spud, and in his spare time can be found exploring the spectacular countryside and coast surrounding his new home.

Grant grew up in the countryside surrounded by farms and farmers. He fondly recalls summer jobs on local farms, but with no familial link to agriculture, it was passion for the industry that took him to Agricultural college in Edinburgh. A placement with McDonalds, investigating the origin of their French fries, set him on a path to a career in potatoes.

“my grandfather was involved in the seed industry and as early pioneers in breeding, Nickerson was always a company he looked up to”

The realisation that there is more to seed than just potatoes lead Grant to Nickerson, where he is eager to put into practice his extensive knowledge of arable cropping plans and husbandry. Grant admits, “Cereals would probably be my strongest area, but there is a lot of maize, in particular that grown for AD, in my area which I am keen to learn more about as well as OSR which is still very big in Yorkshire”

The uniqueness of the Nickerson offering appealed to Grant when he was searching for the next step on his career path. He found the strong links to breeder Limagrain particularly appealing in terms of the added value this provides customers, similarly the Seed Specialists, who he describes as “so much more than pushy salesman”.

Grant is an outdoorsy sort and likes nothing more than walking his dog in the Yorkshire Dales. When he isnt busy convening with nature or helping farmers with their cropping plans he can often be found at the rugby, cheering on Scotland. In another life, Grant maintains he would have been a historian. A passionate amateur, instead he must content himself with spending his holidays touring notable battle sites and historic monuments.
